Then...

My bedroom door bangs open very suddenly near midnight. Olympe storms inside and secures the bolt behind her.

“He won’t tell me where he’s gone.”

I turn hot, apprehensive of the thin, silk top I wear. I jump from atop the mess of sheets, untucking the blankets to pull them over my lack of apparel.

Olympe sits quickly onto the bed, unaware of the position she’s caught me in. I instead throw a pillow in front of me to cover the sight, prepared for bed before her arrival.

“Who?” I croak before clearing my throat. “Who won’t tell you where they went?”

Olympe sighs heavily. “Bash. He’s always sneaking out of his room. Whenever I try and follow, he tells me to go to bed.”

“Where could he be wandering so late at night?”

Olympe shrugs, annoyed. “I’m not sure, but I’m going to get to the bottom of it.”

She stands, taking me with her. I yelp as the pillow falls, revealing the spaghetti strap ensemble. Olympe looks down briefly before snapping her head back up.

“We’re both girls.” She waves a dismissive hand. Olympe riffles through my dresser before finding and throwing a white slipover. “Although I would argue it’s rather cold. You’re going to freeze.”

I accept it gracefully, looking down to hide the blush in my cheeks. Hardly waiting until my slippers are on, Olympe laces our hands together as we race from the castle.

“Maybe we can still catch him,” she pants, now deep into Bayer streets. “He went into the field and to the woods. I assume you keep straight.”

“Assume?”

“Unless you happen to take a turn.”

“Reassuring.”

“We’ll either find him or come right back out to Bayer. There are unfortunately no surprises here.”

Except for the one holding my hand, dragging me into the forest at midnight.

Bats fly overhead, racing in a nocturnal daze alongside prey of the night. Every crack of our footsteps turns me paranoid. Even though my role as guard has only been a few days, I’m walking alongside a royal, and even a child could recognize the dangerous potential in it.

Should anything happen to Olympe, I fear my repercussions will extend beyond Duanna’s wrath. The recoil would be harder than any verbal assault or physical punishment. Any injury upon Olympe, the girl with satin skin and plump lips that part in admiration of the forest, would be the death of me.

“You still know where we’re going?” I ask.

“Of course.”

“We’ve done this same trail five times.”

We stop and turn to see how behind us, Bayer walls can be made out. Upset, Olympe blows a raspberry and rubs her temple. Whether it’s her frustration or the fact that she’s dropped my hand, a sudden realization hits me.

I’d run this trail barefoot a million times if it meant erasing the disappointment on her face.

Yanking us off the trail, Olympe yips as we dive into the unexplored section of Bayer woods. “If Sebastian Godrun doesn’t want to be found,” I say, pulling against her reluctant hand. “Then why would he stay on the beaten path?”

I know I have her when she laughs, falling into line with my steps.
